You all are missing one point, and thats the reason why he is in jail now. He KNOWINGLY distributed copyrighted material and was asked many times to take the content down. After him refusing to do so for years, the FBI said enough is enough and shut it down. Was the site used for legal purposes? Yes. The users should of also been notified that the FBI had given a notice to Megaupload like 2 years ago that if they dont take down the copyrighted material, they would be shut down. The users knew/should of known the risk already. They were, to an extent, fine because they cant control what people upload all the time. What screwed them over was the rewards program. Paying people to upload copyrighted material is a big no no.

Mega upload was a download site used by many people for legal reasons. If the owner was trying to keep illegal material on it, than thats a different story.

I create graphical content for a living so I have a vested interest in protecting copyright. I can't comment too much on Megaupload as all the case info is not yet in the public domain, but I do believe this dude ran an upload site and actually paid people to upload content under the uploader rewards program… that would seem to place onus upon him to ensure copyright was not breached
